Online Shopping-A Boon For Myasthenics
So what kind of a shopper are you?
I am a reluctant shopper. I buy only what is needed when needed. As in when there is a dire need. Be it clothes, shoes, mobile handsets or whatever.
I still am a typical indecisive shopper. I have to see, touch and feel the product before I make a purchase. I prefer shopping alone.
Surely there are others like me who like something from an M&S, Mango, Aldo, Home Centre, Good Earth or Pure but go home empty-handed. The fabric, the footwear or that lovely centerpiece has to call me back. It is only then that I make that second trip to the shop.
A person who shopped at a Sarojini Nagar flea market all her youth, to graduate to a mall, when online shopping happened in India it took a while to register. Fascinating was the fact that my spouse Rahul Narvekar was one of the pioneers to bring online shopping in India with Fashion&You.com and later established Indianroots.com.
Of course, I shopped at both sites for garments, sarees, accessories, etc. but it was only 3 years ago that I got hooked on online shopping. Albeit for a different reason.
You see, with Myasthenia Gravis you are left more or less disabled. Harsh as it may sound, it is the truth.
Shopping – A Task For People With Autoimmune Disorders
To dress up in a jiffy, hop into the car, reach for the mall, time-pass window shop to eventually buy one piece in the entire day, chill out with a cup of coffee before catching a movie towards evening followed by dinner at the latest joint that opened…all seems a dream now. A thing of the distant past.
I was in the ICU. The year 2015. I had shed almost 10 to 12 kgs in a span of 3 months. Myasthenia crisis. Sexy I looked to the world. I loved my flat tummy, I wouldn’t lie. All clothes of mine now seemed like maternity wear. As I lay on that bed, waiting daily to hear the magic word ‘Discharge’ from the doctor, I did something I had never done earlier.
As mentioned in my earlier posts, I had special permission to have my mobile in the ICU, since I was in a fully conscious state compared to the rest of the bed occupants of the Neuro and Stroke ICU. 2 rules were broken that day. One, of using the phone for anything other than listening to music. Two, of shopping when needed.
There was no need for me to shop clothes but I did. I wanted to pamper myself.
What the heck! I had never been that thin ever in my life. At 51 and 52 kgs I had to make the most of it. I remember I bought myself a fuchsia short jumpsuit, the shortest possible dresses, flowery some of them, super classy other. All in S size. I discovered Myntra and Limeroad then.
I firmly believe those purchases were one of the reasons that prompted me to get well sooner and be discharged. New ‘ashleel’ clothes waiting at home. What could be more exciting than that?
Speaking to Ranjana from that hospital bed, I realized home management had taken a beating in my absence. But now I wasn’t hassled. I had the entire day to shop in between physiotherapy sessions, steam inhalation, lung exercises, and doctor visits.
Soon I was placing grocery orders from Amazon.in, dog food and books from Flipkart, vegetables, and fruits from Nature’s basket, my multi-nutrients from PureNutrition. I was hooked to online shopping. Count your blessings I say. The fingers were limp but the thumbs were moving. I was pressing ADD TO CART every single day.
Online shopping is such a boon for people who cannot step out. I remember I found it insane when a friend used to order diapers online, many years ago. She genuinely had no time to step out after office to buy baby products. I now understand.
For me, it works wonderfully since I do not have to get ready and go out to shop, which for me is a 2-day project of making up the mind and preparing the body! Damn.
Why Online Shopping Is A Boon For Myasthenia Gravis Patients
Online shopping works beautifully for people with nervous system disorders like Myasthenia Gravis because:
- There is no one staring at your bloated face and body.
- You shop alone without a child or friend or husband commenting on your decision-making power.
- You can take as many breaks as you wish.
- You don’t have to carry heavy carts or shopping bags around.
- You can leave things in the cart in the right-hand top corner without the fear of it being towed away.
- You can take power naps in between shopping.
- You can window shop to your heart’s content.
- You don’t need to wear them straight out of the salon look to go to the mall and shop.
- You can shop in your chuds if you wanted.
- You have better sales here than in a shop.
The list is endless.
The last time I did a house makeover, trust me I did not move my butt. I only moved the mouse. With sales happening left right and center, I did my research well and bought everything at a click of a button, from the sofa set to sofa fabric to curtain fabric to a cupboard. Pepperfry and UrbanLadder made my work so much easier.
I actually sat to write this post because I have been bombarded with emails about the online sales each day. Bugging after a point it is yet I could not but thank them for making my life so much easier. In fact, the Amazon Great Indian Festival begins today.
The latest I placed an order for were the winter herbs and flowers from Amazon. Yeah going to my favorite nursery is a huge task for me. And I also do not want to compromise on my greens.
Online shopping is not a luxury for Myasthenics. It is a necessity. A boon.
I pray for a quick and fast and permanent remedy and cure for Myasthenia Gravis so that all across the globe Myasthenics could go back to shopping on their two feet, carrying their own shopping bags with a smile that does not droop. I hope awareness about this rare auto-immune disorder increases and people stop asking, ‘What is Myasthenia Gravis’?
